Shoulder Care

Shoulder Overview

Rotator cuff tears, arthritis, sports injuries. Dr. Arthur Black is a fellowship-trained shoulder surgeon with 30 years of surgical experience. Conservative care first, surgery when needed.

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, allowing tremendous freedom of movement and function. That mobility, however, also makes the shoulder susceptible to a wide variety of problems involving the rotator cuff, cartilage, labrum, biceps tendon, and surrounding structures. Shoulder conditions can develop gradually over time or occur suddenly as the result of an injury.

My approach begins with understanding the individual patient, not simply the diagnosis. The same finding on an MRI can affect two people very differently depending on their age, activity level, goals, symptoms, and overall situation. I believe patients should understand what is causing their problem, what their options are, and why I am recommending a particular course of treatment.

Many shoulder problems can be successfully treated without surgery. When conservative treatment is appropriate, that is where we start. When surgery offers the better solution, procedures can range from minimally invasive shoulder arthroscopy to rotator cuff repair, stabilization procedures, and shoulder replacement. The goal is always the same: choose the right treatment for the right patient and help them return to the activities that matter to them.
